Platte River Half Marathon - A Plan of Sorts

First of all, I ran a super awesome 6 miler after work yesterday.  Even though I was sore everywhere (from Wednesday's Gravity class, post HERE).  The day after jump squats is painful.

I sat on my behind all day at work and hobbled around the office as necessary.  After picking A up from school, and being reassured that she would rather have the house to herself and watch Celebrity Apprentice on the DVR, I hustled out in the sunshine.  I didn't need my long sleeves.  60 degrees, sunshine, a tailwind for the last mile.  Almost perfect.  6.01 miles, 58:09.

This Sunday I'm running the Platte River Half Marathon (near Denver, CO, state #7) with B, LJ, and L.  Check out our race day outfits.

So, my only orange t-shirt isn't plain.  Oh well, Lisa IS fast.  I might tape a big arrow to it and have her stand next to me for all of the pictures.

But....wait!  Have you seen the weather forecast for Denver?  The next 10 days are gorgeous and perfect running weather. Except for, um, Sunday.  Rain, snow and wind with a high of 45 and a low of 32.  Honestly!  Damn you Colorado!

Revised outfit.

Long sleeves, tights, gloves, plastic bag to wear over.
The course is mostly flat.  That may be the only good news.  I'm concerned about running at elevation, since Giraffy is constantly reminding me that there is no air in Colorado.

I prefer to have a plan for a race.  For this one, I'm at a loss.  With so many environmental factors working against me, and the probability of not wearing my iPod (I don't want it to get water logged), the plan has to be to beat my PW, 2:15.

Note:  The forecast for Portland on Sunday is high 60s, no rain.  Honestly.

Good luck to everyone racing this weekend, and Monday in Boston!

  1. Good luck this weekend! I've run the Platte Half twice and it's lots of fun, and the food afterwards is awesome! (I'm talking Melting Pot!) The course is super easy and flat, and almost entirely on a bike path. Everyone spreads out super quickly. You'll have a great time!

  6. I love the bright orange of the "fast" shirt - who knows, maybe the weather will change and you can wear it? Or is Texas the only place where the weather can change on a dime? Any case, have fun!!!

  9. The weather is crazy right now. My 50 miler on Saturday will probaly start in the low 40s and climb to 70+ before I'm done. I think I might be removing some layers.

Run strong and have fun no matter what the weather does.

  10. man now the lisa is fast is lost with the other outfit haha. I'm at a loss what to do bc of the altitude as well. I told Kara I could ATTEMPT to pace her, but no promises. I'm really really REALLY hoping for a miracle with change of weather. I can do cold. I can do rain. I HATE wind. Le sigh.

whats the weenie status on S?

  11. That race is on my list, but Im also kinda scared of the elevation. I need to suck it up and do it next year because the race itself sounds awesome. And my brother lives in Thornton so I have a place to crash and someone to drag me away from the finish line should the elements win :) Good luck!! Cant wait to her how it goes!!!

This past Saturday's race with Tiffany was also my PW time. Hopefully the snow/rain holds off till after your race. Good Luck!!

  13. I'm telling you. Colorado has NO air, AND it's cold. And there's snow. Becka might be the only redeeming thing from that whole state.

Good luck this weekend, and have fun!!

  15. Both outfits look great... especially the plastic bag. I hope you don't need it. I hear Colorado weather can be a bit fickle that way... too bad you'll be missing out on such a nice weekend here in OR. Good luck, enjoy the run and way to cross off another state, you rock!

  16. Maybe the bad weather will be delayed by a day? I will be rooting for good weather. Either way, the outfit looks great! Just be sure to go easy at first to see how that elevation will treat you. Have fun!

  19. Welcome to Colorado! I've ran that race before and it's a nice, flat course except for a pedestrian bridge at the end. It's a killer! I was going to sign up for the race until I saw the weather. That and I came down with bronchitis last week. Not back up to 100% so I may run one on the 22nd. Best of luck on your race! Maybe I'll see you at the next one!

  20. The running skirt is ADORABLE. Love it! I have never had to run with plastic on... it would annoy the hell out of me after 10 min. Good luck!

I have a 5k this sunday - it was the first race I ever ran and I go back every year... it makes me tear up just thinking about how far I have come since then.

  24. I love both outfits. Too bad the weather is going to be yucky. Just go into the race with a plan to have fun! That sounds like the best option with the conditions!
