Friday Five - What's Up With RNR Arizona

1.  For those of you following along, S has conceded Montana (and the bonus air miles to get there). One race down, six to go.  I did reserve hotels in CT and RI for the ING Hartford and Amica Rhode Island races in October.  Note to other west coasters--Rhode Island is tiny!  I think all the "host" hotels are booked already.  I don't have a travel buddy or airfare yet, but those are just details...

2.  S and I are flying out to Phoenix tomorrow.  We're running the RNR Arizona Half Marathon on Sunday (state #19).  This wasn't my first choice for an Arizona race.  I'm not a Rock n Roll hater like some of you, but I waited too long to sign up and the race registration was ridiculous.  I had my eye on a different Arizona race in January, but it got bounced in to February...

3.  I had to race Arizona in January, since my lucky spoiled retired parents rent a house in Phoenix for the month.  This way, S and I have a free place to stay (see S, I'm always finding ways to save you money).  Plus, it will be fun to see them and watch them golf after the race. I don't golf, but will get to drive the golf cart!

4.  A bunch of my Portland running girlfriends are doing this race as well.  In fact, I just found out that Karen is on our same flight out tomorrow morning.  I hope to meet up for a pre race picture, at least.  But, you know how S can be....he doesn't like to get to races too early and stand around.

Note to S:  Andy Grammer (Fine by Me) is the headline act for the post race concert.  Can we stick around for it this time?  At RNR Seattle, you told me you didn't know that the act was Gym Class Heroes until we were packed up and driving home.  How do you not know who the headliner is for these races?

5.  Unbeknownst to me, this is the 10th anniversary of RNR Arizona.  The medals are unique, but don't quite cover the outrageous entry fee.

Poor S, we're going to have to spend a lot of time at the expo, gathering free goodies to help make me feel better.

I'm in corral 5, hoping to run a bit faster than I did in Mississippi two weeks ago.

Are you racing this weekend?  Good luck!  Run fast!

Between the $20 in PF Chang gift cards, the two free Chipolte meal gift cards, the samples at the expo and the 18 GUs collected on the race (no joke - you can do that when you walk the dang thing), we covered one of our San Antonio RnR entry fees. But I agree with you, the RnR registration fee is INSANE.

Good luck, have a great time, and gather up as much free swag as you can stuff in your goodie bag!

it is indeed a fast course- only downside is you have to cross train tracks immediately at start line so some corrals (mine included) had to wait till the train passed.

Have fun in AZ! At least you are going someplace warm. Maybe that will help you feel better about the outrageous entry fee?

I'm not a huge fan of RnR. I think they've just gotten too big for their britches. It would be okay if they were consistent, but some of their races are really good and some are lacking...I've always heard good things about Phoenix though. It's one of their older ones, so they should have really worked out any kinks. Have fun!

I'm glad you got the Montana situation worked out!

I'm not a huge RNR fan either, mostly because the race registration seems a lot higher than what I get out of the race. I did the San Antonio RNR, at least for Vegas they have separate medals for the half and full.
